Why Screen Printing?

Screen printing remains the gold standard for custom apparel because of its durability, vibrancy, and cost-effectiveness at scale. The ink is pushed through a fine mesh screen directly into the fabric fibers, creating prints that look bold on day one and still hold up hundreds of washes later.

At Pacific North Press, we've spent years perfecting every aspect of the screen printing process — from artwork preparation and color separation to press setup, ink selection, and quality control. Whether it's a simple one-color logo on work tees or a complex six-color design for a retail line, we approach every job with the same attention to detail.

How Screen Printing Works

A behind-the-scenes look at how your custom apparel goes from artwork file to finished product.

01
Artwork & Color Separation

We review your artwork and prepare it for screen printing. This includes color separation — breaking your design into individual layers, one for each ink color. We'll send you a digital proof for approval.

02
Screen Preparation

Each color in your design gets its own screen. We coat fine mesh screens with a light-sensitive emulsion, expose your artwork onto them, and wash out the design area to create a precise stencil.

03
Press Setup & Printing

Screens are locked into the press and aligned for perfect registration. Ink is pushed through each screen one color at a time, building your full design. Each garment is inspected as it comes off the press.

04
Curing

Printed garments pass through a conveyor dryer at a precise temperature to fully cure the ink. This is what makes screen prints so durable — the ink bonds permanently with the fabric fibers.

05
Quality Control

Every piece is inspected for print quality, color accuracy, and garment condition. Anything that doesn't meet our standards gets pulled and reprinted.

06
Packing & Delivery

Finished orders are folded, counted, packed, and either shipped to your door or prepared for local pickup in Portland. Need it fast? Ask about our 5-day rush option.

Common Screen
Printing Questions

Everything you need to know before placing your screen printing order. Don't see your question here? Give us a call.

What is the minimum order for screen printing?
Our minimum for screen printing is 50 pieces. This allows us to properly set up screens, dial in colors, and deliver the quality you expect at a price that makes sense. For smaller runs under 50 pieces, we recommend DTF transfers as a great alternative.
How long does a screen printing order take?
Standard turnaround is typically 2-3 weeks from artwork approval. We also offer a 5-day rush service for qualifying orders. If you need it even faster, give us a call at 971.200.5002 and we'll see what we can do.
Do I need to provide print-ready artwork?
Not necessarily. While vector files (AI, EPS, SVG) are ideal, we can work with high-resolution images and even rough concepts. We'll review your artwork and let you know if any adjustments are needed before we go to print. There's no charge for basic artwork review.
How many colors can you screen print?
We can print up to 8+ colors per design location. Each color requires its own screen, so more colors means a slightly higher setup cost. For designs with many colors, gradients, or photographic elements, DTF may be a more cost-effective option.
Can you match my brand's exact colors?
Yes. We offer Pantone (PMS) color matching to ensure your brand colors are accurate and consistent across every order. Just provide us with your Pantone codes or brand guidelines and we'll match them precisely.
What's the difference between screen printing and DTF?
Screen printing pushes ink directly into the fabric through a mesh screen, creating an extremely durable print that's ideal for large runs. DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers a full-color print onto fabric using a heat press, which is better for small runs and complex multi-color designs. Both produce quality results — the best method depends on your artwork, quantity, and budget.
