Why DTF?

DTF (Direct-to-Film) is one of the most versatile decoration methods available today. Your design is printed in full color onto a special film, coated with adhesive powder, and then heat-pressed directly onto the garment. The result is a vibrant, detailed, soft-hand print that works on virtually any fabric.

DTF is the perfect complement to screen printing — it fills the gaps where screen printing isn't the best fit, like small runs, complex multi-color designs, or when you need prints on polyester and performance fabrics that are tricky to screen print.

How DTF Printing Works

A look at the DTF process from digital file to finished garment.

01
Artwork Preparation

Your design is prepared as a full-color digital file. Unlike screen printing, there's no color separation required — DTF prints every color in a single pass. We'll optimize your file for the best possible output.

02
Film Printing

Your design is printed in full color (CMYK + white) onto a special PET film using specialized DTF inkjet printers. The white ink layer goes down first, allowing vibrant colors to show on any garment color.

03
Powder Application

A fine thermoplastic adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink on the film. This powder is what bonds the transfer to the fabric when heat is applied. The film is then cured in an oven to set the adhesive.

04
Heat Press Transfer

The prepared film is placed on the garment and pressed using a commercial heat press at a specific temperature and pressure. The adhesive melts and bonds the ink permanently to the fabric fibers.

05
Peel & Inspect

After pressing, the film is peeled away, revealing the finished transfer. Each piece is inspected for color accuracy, adhesion, and print quality before moving to packing.

06
Packing & Delivery

Finished pieces are folded, counted, and packed for shipping or local Portland pickup. DTF orders often have faster turnaround times than screen printing due to simpler setup.

Common DTF
Questions

Everything you need to know about DTF printing. Got a question we didn't cover? Call us.

What does DTF stand for?
DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. It refers to the process of printing a design onto a special film, which is then transferred to a garment using heat and pressure. It's a relatively new technology in the custom apparel world that's gained popularity for its versatility and color capabilities.
How does DTF compare to screen printing?
Screen printing is better for large runs and offers a slightly more "in the fabric" feel, while DTF excels at full-color designs, small runs, and printing on difficult fabrics like polyester. Both produce durable, high-quality results. We'll recommend the best method based on your specific project.
Is DTF durable? Will it last?
Yes. Quality DTF transfers are very durable and hold up well through regular washing. The key is proper heat press application — temperature, pressure, and time all need to be dialed in correctly. We've tested and refined our process to ensure long-lasting results.
Can DTF print on dark garments?
Absolutely. DTF prints include a white ink base layer, which means your colors will be vibrant and accurate on any garment color — black, dark navy, red, whatever you need.
What's the minimum for DTF orders?
Our minimum for DTF orders is 12 pieces. Since DTF doesn't require screen setup, it's much more cost-effective for smaller runs than traditional screen printing.
What fabrics work with DTF?
DTF works on virtually any fabric — cotton, polyester, tri-blends, nylon, performance fabrics, and even some non-textile materials. It's one of the most versatile decoration methods available, which is why it's become so popular.
